Spinal Stenosis Pain

What Causes Spinal Stenosis Pain?

Lumbar spinal stenosis can be brought on by a number of causes that lessen the amount of space available inside the spine that leads to pressure on the spinal cord and nerves within. The most common causes of spinal stenosis are:

Bone spurs. Osteoarthritis damage to the spinal bones can bring about the growth of bone spurs that may grow into the spinal canal and either block it, or cause pressure themselves.

Herniated discs. The rubbery discs between each spinal vertebrae may crack and have it’s softer inner material poke out and press on the spinal cord or nerves. Alternatively, a disc may slip (slipped disc) and press on the nerves located along the spinal column. Each would narrow the spinal canal.

Abnormal growths. Tumors or abnormal tissue growths can form anywhere alongside or in the spinal column causes pressure on the spinal nerves and narrowing the canal.

Spinal trauma. Injuries to the spine can cause damage to one or more vertebrae which can cause nearby tissues to become inflamed. The subsequent swelling can put pressure on the spinal cord.
